Escape to Fire Island

9.04.2014

A topic that seems to come up most frequently in our apt. is how nice it is to rent for the time being. We know we won't always rent and Spencer actually really misses mowing the lawn, doing yard-work and having a garden... but while we live in the city, we love it! Why we love it is because every single Saturday is planned for a new and fun adventure instead of house chores. We have had Fire Island on our summer bucket list and when my friend Lizzie suggested we all go, we were all over it! Fire Island is off of Long Island, so we took the Long Island Railroad to get to Bay Shore and then had to take a ferry to get to the actual Island. It's really cool because there are no cars allowed on this Island (just like Governors Island but much bigger). The Island is only about a half mile wide and 32 miles long so it's basically a loooooong beach.
We met Lizzie's family at the train station and headed over to Fire Island! We had so much fun burying the kids, playing in the water and relaxing! Charley of course loved crawling in the shallow part of the ocean and the boys loved being buried! I loved sitting there talking with Lizzie and Spencer and Micah loved being a boy again making sand castles and burying said boys. :)
She wasn't too sure what to think about going inside the sand castle.
Sand in her hair...
Sand in her diaper...
Sand in her mouth...
The walk to the beach was really cool too. It's a long sidewalk strip from the ferry landing to the beach and it's lined with really cool beach houses. I think it would be fun to rent out a house for the week and live the beach life!
The little town had some shops, food places and bike rentals. It's the perfect get-away!
