Jessica came to visit!

2.28.2015

My good friend Jessica came to visit from Utah this last week! We both taught First Grade at Channing Hall for a few years together and became good friends through school. It was fun to see her and spend some time in the city! A few days before she arrived, the weather did not look promising and I texted her and said she could divert her trip to Miami if she wanted, but she said "no way!" and came anyway! I am glad she did and that she as able to experience the city, despite the cold. We still got out everyday and were able to check everything off our list we made!

Wednesday: Charley and I picked Jessica up from the airport and dropped her bags off quick at the apartment and were off to our first adventure.. the Brooklyn Bridge. It was such a pretty time of night to go and we got to see the sun set and then the city lights light up the sky! It was beautiful to see Manhattan all lit up as we walked across the bridge. Grimaldi's pizza is right by the bridge, so afterward, we met up with Spencer and had pizza at Grimaldi's. Grimaldi's is pretty much the best pizza around (I like Julianna's better but Grimaldi's is more popular)... and you can't go wrong with the regular pie of tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil. It's the classic here in NYC.
Thursday: We went into SoHo to get a Cronut and got there 20 minutes too late! They had already sold out for the day! :( BUT we got the next best thing called the DKA, which I had been wanting to try, and an almond croissant. They were both really good! Some people say they like the DKA's better than the Cronut, so I'm glad we tried it. After that, we walked around SoHo and Jessica stopped in the Alex and Ani store for a NYC bracelet. Then, Jessica was such a big girl and explored SoHo on her own, while I brought Charley back home for her nap and to get tickets at the TKTS booth! Jessica also got on the subway by herself and went to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Way to go Jess!:) I am so glad she was able to go to the Museum and experience it. It definitely is a must if you come to New York. Once she was done there, I came back and picked her up and we went to Chelsea Market to explore. I love Chelsea Market! I bought a really cute ring and Jessica got a fun make-up bag. Then I had her try the BEST taco's in the world at Los Tacos while Charley and I got an horchata! These tacos did NOT disappoint and she was in heaven for 5 minutes while eating them.
Our our way home from Chelsea Market, we stopped to get dinner at Bahnmigo's.. our favorite Vietnamese Pho place and then Jessica and I took off to see a Broadway show. We got tickets to Chicago! I thought it would be more like the movie with lots of colors in every scene... but it was a different Broadway show. The orchestra was on stage for the entire thing, so there were no new sets. The actors sang and danced in front the whole time. Their singing and dancing was really good, but the production was just ok. It was still fun to see a new show! And afterward made up for it. One of Jessica's friend's had recommended going to Ellen's Stardust Diner, so after the show, we went! It was SO FUN! You get into this diner and can order food, drinks and dessert and the waiters and waitresses sing while you eat! They had AMAZING voices too! It was so fun. The owner got on the microphone a few times and one time said that most of these waiters/waitresses go on to sing in the real Broadway shows. Last year 16 made it to Broadway.. so it's a great starting place for them. We loved eating our dessert and listening to them sing the rest of the night! We walked around Times Square for about 5 seconds but it was so windy and cold, we decided not to stay too long since the temperature outside said it felt like -12 degrees!!!
Friday: okay Friday morning was freezing! Again in the negatives, so we slept in, I did a workout with Charley and relaxed during the morning. We left around Charley's nap and left her with Spencer at home while we went to Union Square. We saw the flat-iron building, went into Fish's Eddy, shopped at Lulu Lemon and ate at Sweetgreen Salads (only the best salad in the world!) After we shopped around and got a few things at Lulu, we went back home to pick up Charley and went to Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty. There were actual ice chunks in the Hudson river it was so cold! We got there right around sunset, so we got some pretty amazing pictures! We saw that the free Staten Island Ferry had windows on it (I thought it was an open ferry and would be freezing) so we made it right on time to jump on the ferry and get even closer to the Statue of Liberty! It was such a beautiful time to take the ferry and we got to see the sunset and then the black sky with the Manhattan lights in the distance!
Saturday: We stopped at our favorite Bagel place for breakfast! There are about 10 different bagels to choose from and 15 different cream-cheese options. I got a whole wheat bagel with berry blast cream-cheese. YUM! Then we bundled up and went into Little Italy and China Town. Jessica wanted to buy a Christmas ornament and she was in luck because there is a Christmas store in Little Italy! Afterward, she wanted to buy a selfie-stick and experience Canal Street where the ladies on the street say quietly under their breath, "Gucci, handbags, watches" and lead you into the "back room" to pick out a fake handbag. We had fun using her selfie-stick the rest of the day and a nice Chinese lady led her into this corner, had her turn her back to the street and look at a catalogue full of fake purses and bags. Jessica was more interested in the experience than buying anything, so we looked through the catalogue, but then walked away. She of course offered less than $65 for a bag, but we said thanks but no thanks and left. It was a fun experience though!
After China Town we went up to Macy's on 34th street and looked around for a bit before walking up 5th Ave and stopping in a few pricy stores! Jessica wanted to go into Tiffany's where we later found out it is the original Tiffany's and the one on Sweet Home Alabama! She walked away with a super pretty bracelet! We walked from 34th street all the way up to 70th street where we ran into Central Park and walked around for a while. It had started to snow a bit and was actually really pretty in the park! After taking a few pictures in the park, we stopped at Burrito Box for lunch and then came home because we were cold and wet! We did happen to see this on the Subway though! Classic New York. This girl reading her book definitely DOES NOT know the man laying on her shoulder OR the girl laying on the man who is laying on her shoulder, but being the nice New Yorker she is, let's him take a cat-nap on her during their Subway ride:!)
Thank you so much Jessica for coming!! It was so fun to see you and play in the City!

72 Hour Emergency Kits

2.27.2015

One of my New Years Resolutions this year was to get our 72 hour kits made. I decided to start this goal early since baby #2 was coming soon and I probably wouldn't have time later, so I hopped right on it and made them! It was a very overwhelming process but fun to do. It is also pretty expensive! These kits end up being about $500 total for everything! I know the initial putting together is a lot harder since now all I will have to do is maintenance each year with the food, so I am glad I got the bulk of it done. My sweet friend, Ashley is a nurse and had made an awesome First Aid kit, so I had her send me the word document list she had made. I followed her list for our First Aid kit and then got on Pinterest to find a list for adult packs and list for a toddler and infant kits as well. I figure I will most likely have a toddler and newborn these next 10 years, so better have some things they would need instead of just adult kits. After searching list after list and making my own list, we made a 45 minute drive to Wal-Mart to buy all our stuff. It was a pretty hectic day and we waited in the checkout line for about 45 minutes after getting all our stuff, but we got the bulk of it there which I know was cheaper than anywhere else. The rest of the odds and ends, I ordered form Amazon and got at Target.
So after a month of compiling everything and buying bags to put it all in, we have a car 72 hour kit, a First Aid kit, 2 adults 72 hour kits, a toddler 72 hour kit and an infant 72 hour kit! Also... it was pretty amazing how much stuff I already had laying around the house! Here is our list for the First Aid Kit
